Microsoft has extended the deadline to install Windows 8.1 Update 1 after reports users were struggling to install it.Windows 8.1 Update 1 was released in April, and Microsoft warned users they wouldn't get the next round of Patch Tuesday updates - released today - or any emergency security fixes if they didn't install Update 1.

However, users have complained that the update isn't installing, instead showing a long list of errors.
In response, Microsoft has extended the deadline to upgrade to 10 June - meaning those that haven't yet managed to make the update work will still get security fixes released today.
"While we believe the majority of people have received the update, we recognise that not all have," said Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc in a blog post. "Having our customers running their devices with the latest updates is super important to us. And we’re committed to helping ensure their safety."
"We’re confident that within the next month, the majority of the remaining customers who haven’t updated their devices to the Windows 8.1 Update will be able to do so," he added.
He directed users having trouble with the update to a Microsoft article that addresses one of the errors, and to the Windows community forums.
There's certainly a lot of complaints on those forums, alongside tips from Microsoft moderators.
"Add me to the list of folks who've tried for a week to do the update, on two different computers, both running 8.1," reads one of hundreds of messages on the Microsoft community forum. "One could automatically download the update but the install failed. The other couldn't even download the update; I did so manually. That install also failed. Frustrating beyond belief."
"I literally spent my entire day working on this," said another. "Words cannot describe my frustration."
